A farm-fresh idea: LFCHD hosts Community Farmers’ Market

Vendors from Lexington Farmers’ Market and Bluegrass Farmers’ Market sold a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables Wednesday at the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department’s first Community Farmers’ Market.

“Public Health is about the prevention of diseases and the promotion of good health,” Communications Officer Kevin Hall said. “By bringing both farmers’ markets together for our staff, clients and neighborhoods, we are able to give better access to fresh fruits and vegetables and help educate customers on how to use them to improve their diet. Our Community Farmers’ Market will let us continue to help Lexington be well.”

Staff also could receive Wellness points by signing in after making a purchase and by getting their blood pressure checked by CHEE employees.

The event gave WIC a chance to let participants use their farmers’ markets vouchers on site. WIC participants can receive up to $20 in farmers’ market vouchers, and could increase the amount to more than $40 through various farmers’ market programs. WIC staff assisted clients on site, guiding them to the vendors’ tents and helping with any information they needed.

Additional Community Farmers’ Markets will be held:
